NextFlex News – June 2018 Newsletter
Dear NextFlex Members and Friends,
Special Congratulations to Auburn University!
Our colleagues at Auburn University were recently recognized with the “Outstanding Paper Award” in the Mechanics and Reliability Track at ITHERM 2018 in San Diego. Their paper, “Flexible Power-Source Survivability Assurance under Bending Loads and Operating Temperatures Representative of Stresses of Daily Motion,” broke new ground in subjecting Li-ion batteries to real world test environments for wearables. Several of the findings presented in the paper were derived from the NextFlex-funded project “Mechanical Test Methods for Flexible Hybrid Electronics Materials and Devices” which delivers reliability test protocols for wearable applications including stretching, folding, flexing and bending in moist environments, including exposure to wear and abrasion. Congratulations to the team at Auburn and NextFlex project supporters Optomec and STI: you’re doing foundational work that will catalyze FHE development for years to come. The winning paper has been posted to the NextFlex Member Portal if you’re interested in reading the full text.
Innovation Day 2018
Plans are quickly shaping up for Innovation Day on August 9. We hope you’ll join us for a day of celebration, Technology Hub tours, and thought-provoking speakers including Dr. Nelson Pedreiro, Acting Vice President of the Advanced Technology Center (ATC) at Lockheed Martin Space. In his role, Dr. Pedreiro is responsible for leading an organization of 500 scientists and engineers in advancing space science and technology, and we’re looking forward to hearing his plans and aspirations for the ATC. And, if those plans include FHE, all the better! For more information on Innovation Day, including the Technical Council meeting to be held August 8, and Equipment and Process Demo tours to be held August 10, please visit our events page.
